Reverse Osmosis Lowers Calcium, TDS, AND CYA From Pools

Reverse Osmosis (RO) is the best filtration for your swimming pool. City Wide Pool Service proudly offers The Puripool Process that will lower Calcium Hardness, TDS, as well as excess CYA (Cyanuric Acid) along with salt, bacteria, viruses, phosphates, nitrates, and so much more.  In Las Vegas, we have some of the hardest water in the country and this causes many issues to your swimming pool. On top of that since so many swimming pool owners use chlorine tabs in their pool we also have a high Cyanuric Acid issue as well. But, the good news is with our sister company Pure Pool Purification, we can come to your house or commercial swimming pool and perform RO on your water!

The Purpose of Cyanuric Acid

In an outdoor pool with no CYA, chlorine is consumed within the first 2 hours of sunlight hitting the pool.  CYA serves to protect the chlorine (sometimes called sunscreen for chlorine) and allow it to stick around longer.  However, too much CYA will bind over the chlorine and will not allow it out to work.  We often hear that “I can’t keep chlorine in my pool” when it really is present but unable to break through the grip of CYA. In the end, there is a direct relationship between the amount of CYA in a pool and the proper chlorine level.

It isn’t uncommon for us to pull up to swimming pools with CYA levels as high as 100 parts per million (ppm) and higher! When this happens it can be much more challenging to keep free chlorine working optimally in your swimming pool because the factor to establish the level of free chlorine needed to combat algae is the level of CYA x .075. So, if you had 100 ppm like the pool we just filtered it would take approximately 7.5 ppm (free chlorine) to keep your pool algae free and that can be challenging especially when the water is warm. That’s why the recommended levels of CYA in a chlorine pool are between 30 -50 ppm. Along with CYA the other big reason why we are called out is high levels of Calcium Hardness which will scale your tile, interior finish, filtration equipment and so much more.

Utilizing Reverse Osmosis filtration every couple of years will prevent scale and increase the lifespan of your investment. If you’re curious to know more about how RO works, how you can be swimming in incredible water, and save water, please contact us today!
