Detecting a pool leak can be tricky, but it’s necessary to prevent further damage, such as structural damage or water loss. Here’s what you need to know before seeking help with pool maintenance in Las Vegas.
What are the Signs of a Pool Leak?
An overflowing pool and a leaking pool are two different things. An overflowing pool is easy to spot because water is spilling over the sides. On the other hand, a leaking pool can be more challenging to detect. Here are five signs that can indicate if your pool is leaking:
Sign #1: The pool water level is lower than usual, and you can’t figure out why
It’s normal for your pool water level to fluctuate throughout the season. However, if you notice that the water level is consistently low and you can’t figure out why, it could signify a leak.
Sign #2: The pool deck or around the pool is wet when it shouldn’t be
If the ground around your pool is constantly wet, even when it hasn’t rained in a while, it could indicate that you have a problem with the plumbing system. This is particularly true if the damp soil appears to collect in specific areas around your pool, such as near the pump or around a drain.
Sign #3: There are cracks in the concrete around the pool
Not all cracks are indicative of a leak. Some cracks, like hairline cracks, are common and usually not a cause for concern. However, cracks that are several inches or longer and appear to be spreading can be a structural problem causing the leak.
Sign #4: The ground around the pool is sinking
If you notice that the ground around your pool is sinking, it could be a sign of a leak. This is particularly true if areas of the pool deck have fallen several inches or more because this is often a sign of shifting soil due to water being removed from the ground.
Sign #5: Your water bill is unusually high
Suppose you receive an unusually high water bill and can’t figure out why it could be a sign that you have a leak. This is particularly true if you have a pool and the water meter constantly reads, even when no one is in the pool.
Leak Detection Methods
There are two main leak detection methods used in pools: the bucket and dye tests. Both ways are relatively simple and can be done without hiring a professional, mainly because all you’re doing is confirming that there’s a leak.
The Bucket Test
To conduct the bucket test, you’ll need a five-gallon bucket, marker, pool testing strips, a garden hose (optional), and a stopwatch. Here’s what you have to do:
- Step 1: Fill the bucket with water until it’s about ¾ full. Then mark the water level on the side of the bucket with a marker.
- Step 2: Leave the bucket alone and watch to see if it starts to empty on its own over time.
- Step 3: If the water level drops significantly in a short amount of time (less than 24 hours), there’s likely a leak somewhere in your pool.
Of course, it’s also possible that the water evaporated, so you’ll want to do the bucket test again on another day to see if you get the same result.
The Dye Test
You’ll need a bottle of pool-safe fluorescent dye, a garden hose, and a stopwatch for the dye test. Here’s what you have to do:
- Step 1: Turn off all the pool equipment, such as the filter pump, chlorinator, and heater.
- Step 2: Add the dye to your pool water and turn on the filter pump. You can also add the dye directly to the skimmer basket if you’re using a garden hose.
- Step 3: Run the filter pump for at least 15 minutes to allow the dye to circulate throughout the pool.
- Step 4: Turn off the filter pump and then observe the pool water for signs of dye.
If you notice any dye in the water, this can indicate that you have a leak somewhere in your pool. Note that the wind can also carry away the dye, so it’s not always a foolproof method.
After you’ve detected the leak, you’ll need to take steps to repair it. Of course, you can do it yourself, but the best and easiest way is to call a professional to help you!
