Given how there are at least 10.4 million private swimming pools in the US by now, it’s safe to say that most US homeowners who can afford a pool will get one. And why not? A pool has a lot of perks, allowing you to enjoy swimming and bathing whenever you feel like it — and the weather permits.
However, sooner or later, pool stains are bound to show up. If you’re wondering what to do when you notice them or are looking for a pool cleaning service in Las Vegas, just keep reading!
How Do Pool Stains Come to Be?
Most commonly, stains form as a result of irregular cleaning and deteriorating water balance. They can be created during the pool’s construction, and how often and fast they appear can depend on the quality of the water and its source.
Rust, minerals, and metal can find their way into the pool water and, in time, can manifest as stains, but organic matter too — algae, worms, or bacteria — can cause stains too.
Telling Organic From Metal Stains
There are two general ways of determining the kind of stain: its color and how easily it can be cleaned.
Organic stains are a bit lighter and brighter and often result from leaves, berries, or algae. They usually disappear pretty fast when you try to scrub them with a bit of granular chlorine.
On the other hand, metal stains are a bit darker — brownish, black, and green — and usually result from copper, iron, or manganese in the water. If you try to scrub them away, metal stains will be more resistant, which will help you recognize them.
Removing Organic Pool Stains
The best way to get rid of organic stains is the following. Simply remove all dust, leaves, and debris from the pool and regulate the chlorine levels, so they’re below 1.0 parts per million. Add some “shock” to the pool to help chlorine levels before stabilizing them. If the stains still won’t come off, scrub them with TLC or chlorine granules. Pump some new water and brush until they’re gone.
Removing Metal Pool Stains
Removing metal stains can be slightly more complicated. Start by lowering the chlorine levels and circulating the water before adding algaecide to kill off algae and apply vitamin C to the stains. Scrub them with chlorine granules and more ascorbic acid, if needed, until they’re gone. Then, circulate the water again.
Preventing Future Stains From Forming
Prevention is always better than cure. The best way to prevent stains from forming is to regularly clean your pool, circulate the water, and maintain chlorine levels. From time to time, you can add some chemical enzymes to help balance the water levels.
